There has never been a better time to be a chartered management accountant

On 7 November 2009, 33 new Associate members of CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) Malaysia Division and Singapore received their membership scrolls from the CIMA Divisional President, Chandra Mohan Balasubramaniam FCMA. The CIMA Membership Graduation ceremony was held at Prince Hotel and Residence, Kuala Lumpur. Together with families and loved ones, more than 150 people filled the ballroom to join in the joyous occasion.
Associates are students who have been admitted as members of CIMA after successful completion of the CIMA examinations and attainment of 3 years' relevant practical experience. Fellows have a higher grade of membership, with an additional minimum of 3 years senior and strategic experience.
Mr Chandra Mohan said, 'As we are all aware, we faced a period of unprecedented global economic instability for which we are now seeing some first signs of recovery. Against this background of rejuvenation, I would argue that there has never been a better time to be a chartered management accountant. A growing number of businesses are increasingly utilising the skills of management accountants to help achieve long-term, sustainable success'.
He added: 'The institute's qualification, its innovative research programme and the support it gives to its members in the form of CPD provides the essential ingredients to help members guide businesses through the downturn and drive them towards a successful and sustainable future. In short, this is an ideal opportunity for members to show their real value.'
'With this in mind, CIMA is working hard to continue its growth and to provide members with first class support. We must reinforce our strategy to expand our membership by moving into new markets and capitalising on existing markets.'
'We have already made good headway in both these areas. Our global presence has been strengthened by securing agreements with other qualifying and training bodies around the world such as CPA Australia, the Chinese Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta and the Society of Management Accountants of Canada. The benefits of such alliances are threefold: they give our members greater employability, they increase our potential membership numbers and they help to develop our global influence.'
The CIMA Membership Graduation Ceremony is an annual event held to celebrate the attainment of Associate membership by CIMA students who have passed the final CIMA examinations and to recognise the elevation of Associate members to Fellow status.
